What to expect
This tour takes you through the history of one of the most powerful families in the world—the Medici—and their rise to dominance.
We begin with Cosimo the Elder, the true architect of Medici power, as we visit Palazzo Medici, the prototype for all Florentine palaces. Here, we’ll see the city’s first private garden, with its picturesque citrus trees still thriving in large terracotta pots. But the true highlight is the private Chapel, whose frescoes depict the Journey of the Magi, immersing us in a fairy-tale-like atmosphere.
Next, we head to Palazzo Vecchio, Florence’s political heart, which once symbolized the Republic before being transformed into a Medici residence.
Inside, we’ll explore:
• The Hall of the 500, where Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci once worked.
• The Studiolo, a hidden, alchemy-themed chamber designed for Grand Duke Francesco I.
• The Hall of Maps, where we’ll gaze at ancient maps collected by Cosimo I—can you spot your country?
And if you’re up for a challenge, you can climb the Tower of Palazzo Vecchio! With 223 steep medieval steps, the ascent is not for the faint of heart—but the reward is a spectacular view of Florence.
